Cracks are showing inside the Trump administration over the ongoing US-Iran conflict. According to a report by The Atlantic, Vice President JD Vance has privately questioned whether the Pentagon is giving President Donald Trump an accurate picture of how the war is actually going.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Joint Chiefs Chairman General Dan Caine have been openly bullish about America’s performance in the eight-week-long conflict. They’ve claimed US forces have decimated Iran’s air force, navy, and defense infrastructure, and that weapons stockpiles remain strong.

Vance isn’t buying it. Behind closed doors, he has repeatedly challenged those claims, according to senior administration officials cited in the report. His biggest concern: America’s missile stockpiles are being drawn down fast. If that pace continues through the Iran conflict, the US could find itself dangerously short of resources in any future confrontation with China, North Korea, or Russia.

It’s worth noting that Vance was apparently against Operation Epic Fury from the start. He warned it would cause more harm than good. He also led the first round of peace talks in Islamabad, Pakistan — which collapsed without a deal. A second round scheduled this week was called off entirely.

Publicly, Vance has praised Hegseth. But the gap between what he says in press settings and what he reportedly says in private strategy meetings is striking. Some officials believe Hegseth simply tells Trump what he wants to hear.
