Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the long-awaited Ganga Expressway on Wednesday, April 29. UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and several ministers were present at the event. The expressway is a 594-kilometre high-speed corridor connecting Meerut to Prayagraj.
This expressway will prove to be a game-changer for the state’s connectivity, industrial investment, agricultural marketing, logistics, and regional balance.
Ease of Doing Business to Get a Boost
The expressway directly links western Uttar Pradesh with Purvanchal. It will accelerate the state’s economy and strengthen the ease of doing business. After inaugurating the expressway, PM Modi also reviewed UPEIDA’s exhibition.
The expressway connects 12 key districts — Meerut, Hapur, Bulandshahr, Amroha, Sambhal, Badaun, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Unnao, Raebareli, Pratapgarh, and Prayagraj.
This high-speed route will significantly cut travel time between these regions. Journeys that once took several hours will now be faster, safer, and more convenient. Lower freight costs will directly benefit industries and traders, giving the state’s economy fresh momentum.
Ganga Expressway Built on PPP Model
The Ganga Expressway has been developed on a PPP (DBFOT) model, representing a public-private partnership. It is currently built with 6 lanes but is expandable to 8 lanes for future needs. With a design speed of 120 km per hour, the expressway will ensure fast and smooth traffic movement.
High-quality construction, wide right-of-way, and strong safety features place it among the most modern expressways in the country.
3.2-Kilometre Airstrip
A notable feature of this expressway is a roughly 3.2-kilometre airstrip near Shahjahanpur. Air Force aircraft can land there during emergencies. The entire route is also equipped with an Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS), CCTV surveillance, emergency call boxes, ambulances, and patrolling units.
Modern equipment has been installed to ensure vehicle speed and safety, giving travellers a secure and comfortable journey experience.
Integrated Manufacturing and Logistics Clusters (IMLCs) being developed along the Ganga Expressway are the project’s biggest strength. These clusters will house manufacturing units, warehouses, cold storage, food processing, and logistics hubs. Capital subsidies, SGST reimbursement, stamp duty exemptions, power incentives, and yellow top-up benefits offered by the government are attracting investors. This will bring large-scale industrial investment to the state and create employment for lakhs of youth.
Interconnected Expressway Network in UP
The Ganga Expressway is being linked to other major expressways in the state — Purvanchal, Agra-Lucknow, Bundelkhand, and Gorakhpur Link. This will create an interconnected expressway network in Uttar Pradesh, set to be the largest in the country. Better connectivity will ease the movement of people and make freight transport faster and cheaper, giving the logistics sector a new push.
Agriculture-based industries, mandis, cold storage, and warehouses will be developed on both sides of the expressway. This will give farmers better markets for their produce and help them get fair prices. Industrial activity in backward regions will also increase as a result.
